The outdoor construction site gives students the opportunity to train in a real working environment with true conditions and experience what it is like on a construction site. Students are taught the skills for construction in the facility which allows them to be trained to go straight into industry.  Hands- on workshops on building construction techniques are conducted in the yard which gives students the opportunity to experiment with different building techniques, tools and materials.

The outdoor site is used for over a third of the course and there is a strong practical emphasis, including exercises and assignments in bricklaying, block paving, roofing and drainage.  The skills taught in the facility allow students to become competent, independent learners and improves their employability.

Our construction facility is also the only on campus outdoor construction site in the region. Many of our students have been offered apprenticeships with construction firms as local employers frequently visit the construction yard and have been impressed with the quality and professionalism of our student’s practical work!

The real working environment consists of the construction site working area, site cabin and changing/welfare rooms. Students can only enter the site wearing the industrial standard protective equipment, which includes a hard hat, steel toe cap boots, eye protection, gloves, and high visibility jacket. All protective equipment and tools are provided by College.

As well as the construction site, Middlesbrough College also offers professional bespoke workshops with industry quality facilities, fully kitted out to replicate a real working environment. These include bricklaying workshops, joinery workshops, painting and decorating workshops, electrical workshops and plumbing workshops.  Students spend the majority of their course in these workshops gaining hands-on practical experience in their chosen trade. All tools, equipment, overalls and safety footwear will be provided by the College.
