Middlesbrough College's Nursing and Midwifery team

Education charity NCFE has announced the finalists for its upcoming Aspiration Awards, with Middlesbrough College’s Nursing and Midwifery team shortlisted for three of the six national awards.

Curriculum Team Leader Alfie Scott MSc has been nominated for Educator of the Year, recognised for his outstanding commitment and dedicated support for learners.

Speaking about the nomination, Alfie said: “It means a lot to be shortlisted. I’ve been on quite a journey in education, starting out as a technician before moving over to become a lecturer. I’m now proud to be a CTL for the Nursing and Midwifery department.

“The department has grown significantly over the last few years. Our facilities are bespoke to the difference areas of healthcare, ensuring students are fully prepared when progressing into their future professions.”

Attendance Officer Paul Horvath has also been shortlisted, receiving a nomination for Support Staff of the Year, an award that celebrates the behind the-scenes staff who consistently go above and beyond to support learners.

Paul said: “The nomination came as a real surprise. I didn’t believe it at first, but once I saw what had been written about me, it was really nice to read!

“It’s great to be recognised for the work put into supporting students. I work across two departments and also help out with other faculties within the college. While it can be challenging, it’s a very rewarding role!”

In addition to the individual nominations, Middlesbrough College’s Nursing and Midwifery department has been shortlisted for Centre of the Year, working alongside the Social Care curriculum, to deliver hands-on learning opportunities.

This category celebrates organisations that shape smarter learning through innovative and transformational education. Reaching finalist status reflects the dedication and expertise of staff who support learners every day to achieve their goals and progress into rewarding healthcare careers.

Many tutors within the department are registered professionals who work as dual practitioners, allowing students to benefit from real world experience and gain valuable insight into a wide range of healthcare settings.

The winners of the NCFE Aspiration Awards will be announced in June – watch this space to find out if Alfie, Paul or the Nursing and Midwifery department that takes home a national award.
