At Middlesbrough College Group, we’re proud to be taking bold steps toward a more sustainable future.

Through our multi-phase Green Plan, we’re working to become a sector leader in environmental responsibility by 2030 and a net zero carbon college by 2050.

Our Big-Picture Commitments

Net Zero by 2050 – We’re on track to become a net zero carbon college by 2050, supported by clear interim targets and a whole‑college sustainability approach.

Leading Sustainable College by 2030 – We’re striving to be recognised nationally as a Leading Sustainable College by 2030, setting the standard for climate responsibility across the sector.

Major Achievements

  • 23% reduction in carbon emissions in just one year (2024–2025).
  • Zero carbon electricity tariff, eliminating all Scope 2 emissions.
  • 48% reduction in carbon intensity per staff member, outperforming sector averages.
  • £4.9 million Salix PSDS funding secured for low‑carbon heating, air source heat pumps, and on‑site solar PV.

Strategic Initiatives

Green Skills for the Future Workforce

We’re preparing learners for careers in the low‑carbon economy with specialised courses in:

  • Wind Turbine Technology
  • Solar Thermal Systems
  • Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Maintenance

Sustainability in the Curriculum

Environmental awareness is embedded across subjects — from Hair & Beauty using refillable and eco‑friendly products, to Digital T Levels focusing on green technologies and e‑waste compliance.

Climate Education and CPD

Staff and students access training on sustainability, including personal carbon footprint awareness and climate literacy.

Biodiversity and Community Impact

  • Trees on Tees Partnership: Two mini forests created on campus, with 300 trees planted.
  • Gardening Club: Hands‑on lessons in organic growing, composting, and pollinator‑friendly habitats.
  • Green Team: Student‑led sustainability resources, campaigns, and enrichment activities that promote positive environmental action.

Infrastructure and Operational Improvements

  • Air Source Heat Pumps & Solar PV: Reducing fossil fuel reliance and offsetting up to 70% of extra electricity demand.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: Integrated into our STEM and TTE buildings to improve water efficiency.
  • EV Charging Stations: Installed across campus to support staff, students, and visitors choosing low‑emission transport.

Partnerships and Engagement

We collaborate with leading environmental partners to magnify our impact, including:

J&B Recycling – improving waste management and recycling performance
Middlesbrough Environment City – supporting community sustainability activities
Tees Community Forest – expanding local biodiversity and tree‑planting efforts

We also contribute to sector-wide change through active participation in the AoC Sustainability & Green Skills Conference, showcasing our leadership in environmental education.
