Meet Sophie, a T Level Media Broadcast and Production student!
From a young age, Sophie has been passionate about radio and media. So, when she discovered the T Level in Media Broadcast and Production (Content Creation) at Middlesbrough College’s Digital Centre, she knew it was the perfect choice to turn her passion into a career.
Sophie said: “I’ve been able to explore myself and my interests at the College. The tutors are amazing, they’re so supportive and accommodating. Plus, the course is interesting, and it’s great being surrounded by people who are all interested in the same thing. It’s so much better than school!”
“The course is a perfect mix of theory and practical work, which really helps me understand topics from all angles.”
Sophie loves the practical, hands-on experience the T Level provides, alongside valuable theory that gives her a full understanding of important industry topics.
She said: “The College has all of the equipment I could ever need – from different cameras and lenses to lights, tripods, microphones, and more.”
Sophie also highlighted the small class sizes, with only eight students in her group, meaning she gets plenty of one-to-one support from her tutors.
“Martin, our course leader, really cares about how students are doing. All the staff go above and beyond to support us, making sure we embrace every opportunity available to us.”
Sophie’s experience on the T Level has solidified her ambitions; she now plans to pursue an apprenticeship to continue learning in a hands-on environment while gaining industry experience.
“The projects I’ve worked on during the T Level have given me a real insight into the industry. I’ve produced advertisements for energy drinks and learned how to create, pitch, and direct a brief. Everything I’m learning is preparing me for the real world.”
T Levels also come with a mandatory industry placement, and Sophie is excited about the opportunity. She said the Digital team in the College really support students to find placements that align with their future career goals.
Outside of the classroom, Sophie has already been gaining real-world experience, helping to manage social media for an escape room and assisting with online advertising as part of work experience with her dad. She’s also a member of the Girls’ Football Academy at the College!
For anyone considering Middlesbrough College, Sophie has one piece of advice:
“Don’t be scared – just do it! It’s so much easier to make friends than you expect.
“The College is an inclusive, welcoming space that offers so much, from extracurricular activities to diverse food options. It’s a great place to learn and grow.”
With a bright future ahead, Sophie is making the most of her time in Digital at Middlesbrough College, gaining the skills, confidence, and experience she needs to kickstart her career in media.
