Levi Cox

Levi Cox is currently studying Access to HE Diploma (Health Science Professions). Inspired by her aunt’s journey from an access course at Middlesbrough College to the final year of university, Levi knew this was the right path for her too. Her goal is to build a career where she can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Reflecting on her experience so far, Levi said:

“I’ve enjoyed it so much. It’s the best experience I’ve had in education. An Access course feels different because I feel so supported and comfortable within my group.

“When I was younger, I struggled with the typical education structure. It often led me to be absent from school, and I found it difficult to cope with. Now, coming into college where I feel comfortable, understood and welcomed means more to me than anything else.

“I think the Access Diploma has brought out the best version of me. My tutors have even said how proud they are to see me grow into a more positive person and become more confident in education.”

One of Levi’s favourite experiences on the course has been spending time in the college’s mock ward.

“During our course we visited the ward and worked with the mannequins, which I found really interesting. We were taught how to take each other’s blood pressure and had the chance to practice ourselves. As someone who learns best through practical work, I love that we’ve been able to experience hands-on learning alongside our studies.”

Levi also wanted to give special recognition to her tutor, Matt, who has supported her throughout the course.

“Matt is one teacher who has really stood out for me because he has always been there when I needed support. During the Christmas break, I was going through a difficult time and sent him a message so he would know what was happening when he returned to work. I wasn’t expecting a reply, especially during the holidays, but he responded and gave me the support I needed. It was such a kind thing to do, and it meant so much to me.

“I have struggled with my mental health while growing up and I didn’t always have the support I needed. I know how much of a difference it can make to have just one person to talk to, and I hope I can be that person for someone else one day.”

When asked whether she would recommend the course to others, Levi did not hesitate.

“I would recommend this course to anyone considering it. It’s intense and requires a lot of hard work, but the staff are fantastic and gaining the qualification at the end makes it all worthwhile.”
