We recently caught up with Avery Maddison, a student on our Access to HE in Science course!
Meet Avery, a dedicated learner who, 11 years after completing their A Level’s, is now in the midst of studying an Access to HE in Science!
Avery’s decision to pursue a career change led them to Middlesbrough College, where they have found a supportive community and a fantastic route to achieving their goal of becoming a Geography teacher.
When asked about the course, Avery said: “It can be intense, but I love it. I love science, and the course content is incredibly engaging. The tutors are extremely friendly, supportive, and always available to offer help and guidance. I’ve made some great friends in my class, too.”
Currently, Avery works as a Civil Servant Regional Training Lead, organising training within the medical field. However, with offers from five prestigious Universities, including Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Teesside, and York, they are more than excited to embrace a new challenge and life as a Geography teacher.
What’s more, Avery’s offer to study Geography at Durham marks a huge milestone, as they are set to become the first student from our Access course to directly enrol onto a degree program at Durham University without the need for a foundation year!
When asked why they chose Middlesbrough College, Avery said: “I chose the College primarily because of how local it is. I would much rather learn in-person than through distance learning, and this course offers exactly what I was looking for.”
“The facilities are great. We do experiments in the labs every week, and we are provided with plenty of informational resources and study guides, which cover all the base and background knowledge needed for the course.”
Beyond their studies, Avery loves playing board games in their spare time, from Dune: Imperium to D&D. They were also recently selected as the Access to HE Student of the Year at the College’s Student Awards 2024 ceremony, where their tutors commended them for their fantastic achievements, attitude, and positive influence on others.
Well done, Avery, we can’t wait to see what you do next – and we know you will be a fantastic Geography teacher!
