T Level – Science (Laboratory Science or Food Science) – Level 3

The qualification is made up of two main parts:

1. Core Component – this gives you a broad underpinning of science across the sector. Topics include:

• Units, quantities and measurement in science
• Biological molecules, cell structure, microbiology and immunology
• Chemical reactions, rates of reaction, formulae/equations
• Particles, radiation, electricity, magnetism/electromagnetism, waves, gas laws
• Health and safety in a laboratory environment; ethical considerations in scientific research

2. Occupational Specialism – you’ll select one of the specialisms and study the skills and knowledge specific to that context. For this qualification there are two specialisms:

• Laboratory Science: techniques, standard operating procedures, chemical calculations, organic chemistry, metabolic pathways, electronics, data collection and analysis, good practice.
• Food Science: techniques, food and drink industry quality/safety, regulations, microbiology in food/drink, raw materials, packaging/processing.

In addition to the above, you’ll also develop transferable skills such as communication, organisation, research (primary and secondary), critical thinking and problem-solving — and continue to build your literacy and numeracy.

This course is studied September – June.

There are two ways to study a T Level, depending on your pathway and your starting point when you join us:

2 Year T Level pathway
For students who are ready to begin their T Level programme straight away, with two years of specialist study and industry experience.

3 Year T Level pathway (Foundation year + T Level)
Designed to provide a strong stepping stone, this pathway begins with a foundation year to build your skills, knowledge and confidence while achieving your maths and English language qualifications (if required), before progressing onto your 2 Year T Level programme.

The right route for you can be discussed in your application journey and at enrolment.

At least five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above, must include GCSE English Language, maths and science at a minimum of a Grade 5.

Assessment is via three main strands:

• Two external examinations covering the Core Component.
• An Employer-Set Project (for the Core Component) – a real-world task from industry so you apply your knowledge.
• A specialist project for your chosen Occupational Specialism (designed with employers) – you’ll demonstrate the skills and knowledge specific to your specialism.
  

Completing this T Level opens up several routes:

• Employment – You’d be well placed for skilled roles such as: laboratory research scientist, biomedical scientist, medical laboratory assistant, food safety analyst.
• Apprenticeships – For example, roles such as Healthcare Science Associate, Technician Scientist, or Food technologist.
• Degree and further study – You could move into degree-related programmes such as Biomedical Science, Applied Science, Food Science/Nutrition, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science.
  

Learners should bring a scientific calculator to lessons. PPE will be provided.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

You’ll also complete the industry placement (minimum 315 hours) which is part of the T Level and gives you workplace experience. While not always formally assessed in the same way as exams/projects, it is essential for successful completion and progression.
