Mathematics (A Level) – Level 3

The A Level is split into 2 sections: Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Applied Mathematics is then split into Statistics and Mechanics.

Pure Maths: these are the methods that we use in maths. These are mostly algebraic and requires good reasoning and problem solving.

Mechanics: modelling and analysing the physical world around us, including the study of forces and motion.

Statistics: Collecting and analysing data and using this to make predictions about future events.

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

You should have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 4/5, with English Language at grade 5.

You will also need at least a grade 7 in GCSE Maths.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

In Year 1 you will sit 2 AS Level exams. In Year 2 you will sit 3 A Level exams.

At the end of the first year there will be 2 AS Level exams: 1 Pure out of 100, and 1 applied out of 60.

At the end of the 2-year course there will be 3 exams: 2 Pure and 1 applied each totalling 100 marks.

Career Opportunities

People who have studied mathematics are in the fortunate position of having an excellent choice of career. There is a huge demand from science, engineering and manufacturing employers. The reason why so many employers highly value mathematics qualifications is mathematics students become better at thinking logically and analytically.

Students should bring along standard stationery, alongside a CASIO fx-991CW or CASIO fx-991EX Calculator.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
