Further Mathematics (A Level) – Level 3

The course is split into three sections Pure, Mechanics and Decision.

• Core Pure, which makes up 50% of the course looks at abstract algebraic concepts beyond that of just A Level Maths.
• Mechanics is focused on Energy and objects colliding.
• Decision is focused on algorithms and business solutions.

The modules you will study are below.

AS Level/Year 2:

• Core Pure 1: Complex Numbers, Matrices, Series, Roots of Polynomials, Argand Diagrams, Proof by Induction, Linear Transformations, Vectorsand Volumes of Revolution
• Mechanics: Impulse, Momentumand Collisions in one dimension; Work, Energyand Power
• Decision: Algorithms, Graph Theory, Algorithms on Graphs, Route Inspection, Critical Path Analysisand Linear programming

A Level/Year 2:

• Core Pure 2: Complex Numbers, Hyperbolic Functions, Series, Methods in Calculus, Volumes of Revolution, Polar Coordinates, Differential Equations
• Mechanics: Impulse, Momentumand Collisions in two dimensions; Elastic Strings and Springs
• Decision: Travelling Salesperson, Further Algorithms on Graphs, Further Critical Path Analysis, The Simplex Method
  

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

You should have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 4/5, with English Language at grade 5.

You will also need at least a grade 8 in GCSE Maths and subject to an initial assessment.

You will need to be studying A Level Mathematics alongside this course.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

At the end of first year, you will sit 2 AS level exams – one pure and one applied (Decision and Mechanics). Both papers are 1 hour and 40 mins and 80 marks for each.

At the end of second year you will sit 4 A Level exams – Two Pure exams, a Mechanics Exam and a Decision Exam. All exams are out of 75 marks and are 1 hour and 30 mins long.

Past students have progressed to study degrees in engineering, computing, accountancy, economics, business, quantity surveying, psychology, architecture, education, mathematics and physics.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities include engineering, accountancy, IT business analysis, computing,
banking, surveying, retail management, air traffic control, architecture, cartography, and teaching.

Students should bring along standard stationery, alongside a CASIO fx-991CW or CASIO fx-991EX Calculator.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
