Applied Science (Extended Certificate) – Level 3

Over the course of this qualification you will cover a mix of core scientific knowledge and practical investigation work. Here’s a student-friendly list of main topics and units:

Mandatory units:

Fundamentals of Science (exam) — covering biology (cell structure, bioenergetics, biological molecules, ecosystems), chemistry (atomic structure, periodic table, structure & bonding, reaction rates and enthalpy) and physics (electricity, motion, medical physics) plus practicals.

Science in Society (exam) — exploring what scientists do, how they handle and interpret data, scientific developments and how science is communicated.

Investigating Science (assignment / NEA) — you’ll plan, perform, analyse and evaluate your own scientific investigation.

There are also a further two units selected to compliment the mandatory units.

This structure means you’ll get both strong core science learning and the opportunity to specialise or apply your skills practically.

September – June

5 GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above. Must include a minimum of a grade 5 in English Language and at least one grade 5 in science.

Your work will be assessed through a combination of external exams and practical non-exam assignments — so it isn’t just about sitting papers, but also about doing science. For example:

External exams for the mandatory units (e.g., Fundamentals of Science, Science in Society) where you demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding.

Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) units where you complete assignments, investigations or practical tasks that are internally assessed and externally moderated.

For the Extended Certificate (equivalent to 1 A level) it’s approx. 40% exam / 60% NEA.

Completing this qualification opens up a range of next steps:

University / HE Courses: The knowledge and skills you gain set you up for degrees in biological sciences, life sciences, biomedical science, forensic science, allied health, nursing and more.

Work or Apprenticeships: The practical investigation skills, science understanding and transferable skills (research, communication, analysis) are useful for lab technician roles, environmental monitoring, health sector support roles or employer-based apprenticeships in science industries.

Broader Skills: Beyond specific courses or jobs, you’ll develop skills that employers value: analytical thinking, being able to use and interpret data, practical problem-solving in scientific contexts, and carrying out investigations.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.
