Course overview

This is an A Level Mix it up programme. You will study this course alongside A Levels.

Learners will study the first two mandatory units in year 1, followed by the second two in year two. The first mandatory unit will enable students to demonstrate understanding of different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported. There will be focus on different campaigns which have led to changes within British Law. Learners will be given the opportunity to plan and create materials for their own chosen campaign for change.

The second mandatory unit will allow learners to gain an understanding of why people commit crime, drawing on what they have learned in Unit one. Learners will be introduced to biological, psychological, and sociological theories that give an explanation as to why people commit crime. They will be asked to describe, apply, and evaluate the theories. Within this unit learners will also look at how and why laws change over time, places and cultures with an emphasis on social attitudes and cultural shifts.

The third mandatory unit will provide an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict. Learners will follow the individual through the system looking at how evidence is processed, the rights within the criminal justice system and the rules of evidence. Learners will develop the understanding and skills needed to examine information to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases.

In the final mandatory unit, learners will apply their understanding of the awareness of criminality, criminological theories, and the process of bringing an accused to court in order to evaluate the effectiveness of agencies of social control to deliver criminal justice policy.
