At Middlesbrough College, we’re passionate about helping young people discover their potential and taking confident steps into the world of work.

That’s why we’re delighted to be part of the Trailblazer programme – a government-funded scheme designed to open doors, provide real workplace experience, and give young people the skills and confidence to build meaningful careers.

Through the programme, the College has recently welcomed three Trailblazer participants into administrative roles, each undertaking a six-month placement. From day one, they’re gaining hands-on experience in a supportive environment, becoming valued members of their teams and developing real, transferable skills.

Everything they need to succeed is fully supported by the scheme, whether it’s equipment, specialist clothing or role-specific essentials. The scheme aim is to remove barriers and give young people the space to focus on learning, building confidence, and growing in a professional setting.

Trailblazer Archie

For Archie, the placement has been a positive and welcoming experience:

“I love it here. I get along with my team, and I feel like I fit in right in this job role.”

Morgan has also embraced the opportunity, working on immersive suite projects within health and care.

“So far it is going well. I have been given the task of making a few immersive suite projects for health and care. I have been really enjoying it, and I get on very well with the digital learning team.”

Their feedback highlights one of the Trailblazer programme’s key strengths: participants aren’t just observing, they are actively contributing, learning, and becoming valued members of their teams.

One of the most inspiring stories comes from Shannon, who began her journey through the Trailblazer scheme:

“I started in a placement position through the Trailblazer Stockton Hub scheme, and I loved every minute of it. I’ve always had an interest in IT, so when the opportunity for a registry admin role came up, I was thrilled to take it.

“My placement went so well that I was offered a business admin apprenticeship with Middlesbrough College. I’m incredibly happy and proud to work here, and I love how many opportunities the college provides to support young people while contributing to the community.

Trailblazer Shannon

Shannon’s journey shows how a six-month placement can turn into a long-term career pathway.

“The college has an amazing network of connections across the Borough, offering a wide range of job opportunities. The team here is incredibly welcoming and supportive, and the training I’ve received has been of the highest standard. I’m thrilled that this is my first paid role since leaving college, and I couldn’t be prouder to represent Middlesbrough College.”

From administration to digital learning projects and beyond, Trailblazer placements allow young people to gain meaningful experience across a range of areas by not just learning about the workplace but becoming part of it.

Adelle Batchelor, Recruitment Advisor at Middlesbrough College, said: “I’m genuinely delighted to have been involved in the recruitment of our Trailblazer candidates. From observing their group activities at the very beginning, to supporting the interview process, it has been incredibly rewarding to watch their journey unfold.

“Seeing all three of them thrive in their roles, adapt so confidently to working life, and feel empowered enough to apply for our apprenticeship programmes is truly inspiring.”

Thanks to its success, the programme will be running again in April, creating even more opportunities for young people to gain experience and start building their futures.

Archie, Morgan and Shannon’s journeys show just how powerful the right opportunity can be, and why Middlesbrough College remains committed to supporting young people every step of the way!
