Students from our Fd/BA (Hons) Audio & Music Production degree welcomed legendary music producer Stephen Street to University Centre Middlesbrough for an exclusive interview and Q&A.
Stephen has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including The Smiths, Blur, Morrissey, The Cranberries, Kaiser Chiefs and The Courteeners. During the session, he shared stories from his career and gave students valuable advice on building a future in the music industry. Pasted markdown
Students had the opportunity to hear about Stephen’s journey into music production before asking their own questions about recording, creativity and working with artists.
Reflecting on his career, Stephen encouraged students to stay curious and continue developing their skills.
“You never stop learning. Don’t ever feel that you know everything because you don’t.”
He also spoke about trusting your instincts when producing music, explaining that there is no single formula for success.
“There’s no hard and set rule. You’ve just got to go on your instinct.”
Stephen highlighted the importance of collaboration in the studio and making every member of a band feel valued throughout the recording process.
“I tried to make sure that every person within the band… felt like they were the most important part of the puzzle.”
Events like this give University Centre Middlesbrough students the chance to learn directly from industry professionals, gaining insights that go beyond the classroom and preparing them for successful careers in the creative industries.
It was an unforgettable experience for our Audio & Music Production students, who left inspired by one of Britain’s most influential producers and the wealth of knowledge he shared from a career behind some of the UK’s most iconic records
