Meet Will Holden, Content Creator Apprentice at Middlesbrough College!

Will previously studied Level 3 Fashion Communication at Middlesbrough College before taking the next step and starting his apprenticeship in November 2025. Now three months into his role with the College’s Marketing Team, Will is gaining hands-on experience and developing his creative skills in a real working environment.

We caught up with him to hear about his apprenticeship experience so far!

“Hi, I’m Will – I’m 18 and I have recently started a Level 3 Content Creator Apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College through Northern Skills. Previously I was a student at Middlesbrough College, studying Fashion Communications.

“I’m very glad I took my Fashion Communications course – it helped me secure my current apprenticeship because part of the course is focused on marketing, and that’s where I realised that this is what I wanted to do. The course also has some great tutors, and it was an enjoyable two years that I’m glad have helped me progress to where I am now.

“I wanted to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to get a firsthand view of working alongside a marketing team, gaining experience and knowledge whilst learning in a professional working environment.

“It was the perfect choice for me personally, as I find I learn a lot more from working on something hands-on rather than sitting in a lesson, and I prefer working on something creative.”

When asked how Will is enjoying his apprenticeship so far, he said:

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here so far and I’m getting more comfortable with the programs and tools we use. I’m developing useful skills that I will continue to use throughout my apprenticeship and even beyond in my further career.

“At the time of writing this I have just finished the January student newsletter, which I began doing in November. Doing this has resulted in a vast improvement in my skills in copy writing while also allowing me to learn the email marketing software we use and understand the importance of email marketing in general.

“I’ve also helped with events such as the Apprenticeship Awards, Graduation and open events. These events are always enjoyable to attend, and they show you what the marketing you have been doing leads up too.”

When asked if he would recommend an apprenticeship to others, Will said:

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to students who want to keep studying but are not interested in going to university. You get a feel of real-world experience and working but also still learn new and useful things in the sessions you attend.

“You also learn from professionals who are qualified in what they do and will be willing to support you throughout your apprenticeship. During my time here so far, I’ve received lots of support, and I don’t feel the pressure to know everything coming into the role as I am here to learn and it’s a very supportive environment to work in where everybody understands that.

“My experience with Northen Skills and securing my apprenticeship was very positive. They were supportive through the entirety of the journey and provided me with very clear and useful guidance each step of the way. They kept their communication consistent and professional, which helped make the process of applying feel straightforward and very well organised.

“Their support whilst I was securing the role and during my interviews made me feel confident and was a huge important step in securing my apprenticeship.

“Securing my apprenticeship through Northen skills was a really positive experience. Both Northern Skills and Middlesbrough College were extremely supportive throughout the process of applying and they provided me with tons of clear and useful guidance every step of the way. Their communication with me stayed really consistent and it helped make the process of applying feel really simple and stress free.

“They supported me really well, which also helped make me feel really confident during my interviews.

“I’ve loved my time here at Middlesbrough College and I’m so excited to see where the future of my apprenticeship will take me.”
