Meet Thomas Harland, who studied Level 3 Motor Vehicle at Middlesbrough College after completing both Level 2 Motor Vehicle and Level 2 Mechanical Engineering.
Thomas says his time at college has given him the skills, confidence and experience he needs for a career in the motor vehicle industry.
“Quite a few of my friends came here and everyone enjoyed it, so Middlesbrough College always felt like the right choice.
“The staff are really friendly and supportive. It’s a great environment with excellent facilities and I’ve really enjoyed the course.
“When I started, I didn’t know much about cars. After completing Level 2 and moving on to Level 3, I’ve learned so much more. I feel ready to progress into an apprenticeship and then a job in the motor vehicle industry.
“My favourite part is being in the workshop. Every day is different. One day you could be working on headlights and the next on engines. You get to learn a bit of everything.
“Sean has been a great workshop tutor and Graham has been brilliant. Everyone is supportive. If you ever need help, all you have to do is ask and they’ll always be happy to help.”
One of Thomas’ proudest achievements was taking part in the College’s international programme, which gave him the opportunity to travel to Spain and gain work experience in a garage overseas.
“I got the chance to experience a new culture and work in a different country. It helped me develop my practical skills, learn a different way of working and even pick up some of the language. It was a brilliant experience.”
For anyone thinking about studying Motor Vehicle at Middlesbrough College, Thomas has some simple advice.
“Just do it. It’s a brilliant course that’s really practical and interactive. The theory can be challenging at first, but you soon get used to it. The tutors are really supportive and it’s a great course if you want a career in the motor vehicle industry.”
