Sadie O’Neill

Monday 20 July 2026
Sadie O'Neill

We caught up with Sadie O’Neill, a Hair and Makeup Artistry student from Middlesbrough College and University Centre Middlesbrough (UCM)!

“At Middlesbrough College, I studied Level 2 and 3 Hair and Media Makeup, as well as a Level 3 Special Effects for Theatre and Film course. I then progressed to University Centre Middlesbrough, where I completed a Foundation Degree and a bachelor’s degree in Hair and Makeup Artistry for the Creative Industries.

“I knew UCM was the right next step for me after college. Many of the tutors I had during my college studies continued teaching me through to Level 6, which meant I had already built strong relationships with them. The smaller, close-knit environment really stood out to me, and the small class sizes meant I felt more supported and able to build strong relationships with both tutors and classmates.

“This degree offered a huge range of specialist skills and experience, including makeup fundamentals, special effects, prosthetics, body art, airbrushing, wig making, prosthetic ventilation and application, as well as hairstyling, fashion, theatre and historical hair and makeup

“I developed theory, application techniques, communication skills, portfolio development, and learned how to build a strong professional network to support my transition into industry. The course also provided valuable hands-on experience across a range of roles.

“One of the highlights of the course was a trip to Paris, which brought our class and tutors even closer together.”

Since graduating, Sadie has gone on to specialise in special effects and prosthetics for visual media, including television, film, music videos and fashion.

“I’ve continued working within the visual media industry, particularly as a special effects and prosthetics artist, while also taking on fashion and music video projects. I’ve had the opportunity to work with beginners, students and industry professionals across a variety of creative sectors.”

Sadie has also gained experience working on a wide range of exciting projects.

“Some of the most exciting opportunities I’ve had include working at London Fashion Week, contributing to theatrical productions, music videos, student shoots and film projects.

“I would recommend this course, especially to aspiring artists who want to explore different areas before deciding on a specialism. It’s also great for those new to the industry, as well as those who want to broaden their existing skills.

“I’d like to thank the tutors, students, colleagues, friends and family who supported me throughout my academic journey.”
