Rebecca’s Journey from Level 2 to Level 6
We caught up with University Centre Middlesbrough student Rebecca, who shared her journey from Level 2 studies all the way through to achieving a Level 6 qualification.
“I started with a hairdressing retrain course at Level 2 and then progressed through Levels 4, 5 and 6 in Hair and Media Makeup within the Creative Industries.
“I initially chose University Centre Middlesbrough because it was local to me, but I had also heard so much positive feedback about the university.
“After leaving school, I didn’t go straight to college. I began my journey back into education with a retrain course at Middlesbrough College. After that, I discovered the University Centre Middlesbrough and felt it was the perfect opportunity to achieve a degree.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time on the course. At times it has been challenging and requires a lot of hard work, but there has always been fantastic support from the tutors.
“Coming from a hairdressing background, I had no professional experience in makeup. Choosing a degree that combines both hair and makeup allows me to upskill and broaden the services I can offer. I can now work within the bridal industry as a dual artist, providing both hair and makeup services.
“The course didn’t just teach me technical hair and makeup skills. It also gave me the knowledge and confidence to market myself professionally, from building my CV and creating a website to developing my social media presence and attracting the right audience for my services. It really equipped me with everything I needed to start my career.”
When asked what advice she would give to anyone considering studying at University Centre Middlesbrough, Rebecca said:
“I would recommend this course to anyone interested in the industry.
“If you’re an adult learner and feel nervous about returning to education, know that I felt the same. I was over 25 when I started, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
“My advice is simple: just go for it!”
