Matthew Mallett

We caught up with Digital Services’ new network technician, Matthew Mallett!

Although Matthew is new to the title in his role, he has been a part of Middlesbrough College since 2020. Starting as a student in Level 3 Computer Networking and Security, after completing the course he joined the College as an apprentice in Level 4 Network Engineering with Northern Skills!

When we asked Matthew what his Level 4 was like, he told us “I really enjoyed my apprenticeship. I’ve always driven myself to work in IT from a young age. I wanted to progress further after College, however, going through the University route didn’t interest me. The director of IT approached my class with an opening for an apprenticeship after College. I applied and was determined to get the role as I knew an apprenticeship would be best for my skill set, and I was successful!

“Being able to learn and gain real work experience at the same time has prepared me for full-time employment, as well as getting me on the right path to progressing. I aim to keep developing my skills and work on more projects to become a network engineer.

“In written work, my assessor was always supportive and reactive, including giving helpful feedback straight away, directing me on what I needed to do to make it the best quality, and hitting all my KSB targets. This has massively helped me to reach the final stage of my apprenticeship (endpoint assessment) 6 months earlier than expected!”

Matthew has now progressed from an apprentice to having a full-time role with Middlesbrough College. He said: “Some jobs can include administrating wired and wireless networks, managing mobile phone deployment, responding to incident and service request tickets, and assisting with completing networking projects across the campus. For example, a recent project has been setting up the new TTE building which has been interesting to get involved with!”

We asked Matthew what his favourite part about progressing with the College has been, he told us “Working at Middlesbrough College is a pleasure due to the friendly atmosphere. My team feels more like friends than colleagues.”

In Matthew’s spare time, he enjoys hiking, camping, and playing guitar!
