Meet Katy, a Middlesbrough College Group alumnus who turned her passion for creative media into her dream career!
Katy’s journey began in 2020, when she picked up a camera in a classroom at Middlesbrough College.
As a student at MC Digital, she knew she wanted a creative future – and her Level 3 National Diploma in Creative Media, followed by her Level 3 Junior Content Producer Apprenticeship in 2022, gave her the perfect springboard to make her dream a reality.
Fast forward to today, Katy is now running her own business, Katy Does Media, offering videography, photography and content creation projects. Previously, she lead the Video and Photography service at Colewood Digital, a digital marketing company based in Stockton. She has built a career full of what she describes as “pinch-me” moments – from filming automotive brands in Sweden to luxury boats along the French Riveria – and says it wouldn’t have been possible without the support she received from Middlesbrough College and Northern Skills.
Katy said: “During my studies, I was introduced to a range of potential career path and heard from lots of guest speakers from the industry who shared their experiences. That exposure was the spark that inspired me to pursue an apprenticeship and ultimately led me to where I am today.
“Without Middlesbrough College and Northern Skills, I wouldn’t have reached where I am today. My skills have developed significantly since my college days, but it was through the apprenticeship that I truly discovered how to apply them professionally.
“I can’t recommend the apprenticeship route enough. You earn while you learn and gain valuable, hands-on experience at the same time. It’s a great opportunity, especially in today’s competitive job market, and an excellent way to get your foot in the door.
“The tutors at both Middlesbrough College and Northern Skills treated me like an adult, which really helped build my confidence and prepare me for the professional world. By the time I entered employment, I already felt comfortable communicating and presenting myself in a mature, professional way.”
In 2023, Katy won the Creative Digital Apprentice of the Year Award at Middlesbrough College Group’s annual Apprenticeship Awards ceremony. Since completing her apprenticeship, she has continued to stay connected with her tutors and mentors.
“I felt extremely supported throughout both my course and apprenticeship, was kept up to date, and knew I could approach my mentors whenever I needed guidance. I had support when required but was also given the freedom to grow professionally and independently. The facilities were also fantastic.”
To anyone considering a creative career, Katy says: “Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t feel pressured to follow the same path as everyone else – take the route that feels right for you. Being different is a strength, and if I hadn’t chosen the path I did, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
“Your dreams are absolutely achievable, but you have to be willing to put in the work. Success doesn’t come easily, but with determination and passion, it’s always within reach. It’s completely okay not to take the university route, particularly if you’re a creative person – there are so many other ways to learn, grow, and succeed.”
“Get yourself on LinkedIn, attend networking events, and invest time in building your personal brand. These things will set you apart and put you ahead of others on a similar journey.”
Alongside her role at Colewood Digital, Katy also works with Stockton Globe, covering PR events, and takes on freelance photography projects, including weddings and events, which allow her to explore her creativity even further.
She added: “Recently, I’ve also started public speaking, helping small businesses make the most of their social media and understand how to use it effectively. Since I spend so much time on social platforms myself, it’s really rewarding to be able to share that knowledge and see others grow from it.
“Life is busy and I do a bit of everything – but I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
