Meet Harry, Level 3 Music Practice student!

Harry has always known that music was his passion – there was never a question of studying anything else. After studying GCSE Music at school and spending hours watching live performances online, continuing his studies at the next level felt like the natural next step. That’s why he chose to study Level 3 Music Practice at Middlesbrough College.

Harry said: “I really enjoy the course –the whole experience has been a huge confidence boost. I used to find it difficult to talk to new people, but now it’s second nature.

“I even enjoy the parts of the course I wasn’t initially as interested in, like the music tech side of things. But the course has taught me that every element of music production is important, and learning about the different aspects of it has really shaped my understanding and helped me see how it all fits together.”

In his first year, Harry studied the history of the music industry, something he found fascinating. “You learn how and why certain movements revolutionised the industry, how bands paved the way for others, and even the realities—both good and bad—of working with record labels.”

Now in his second year, Harry is taking on even more hands-on projects. “Right now, we’re working on a unit where we can choose different tasks, like creating an EP from scratch and documenting the process. There’s so much creative freedom, and everything we learn is valuable for industry.”

“In our first year, the college staff organised gigs for us, but now in our second year, we’re planning our own gigs as a class—getting the full experience of the industry.”

The staff, he says, are incredibly supportive. “If you have any problems, they’ll sit with you and go through it. They’re professional but friendly and treat you like an adult.”

“I’ve made great friends here—one of the best things about studying music at College is that everyone is passionate, likeminded, and interested in the same thing, and that makes a huge difference.”

For anyone considering applying to the course, Harry has simple advice: “Do it.

“If you’re passionate about music, go for it. Don’t have a ‘you’ll make it or nothing’ mindset, and don’t let anyone discourage you.”

“This isn’t just about your future—it’s about the experience. Then, if you really love it, you can make it your future.

“The course is really hands-on and gives you access to industry-standard equipment. You learn everything, from how to speak into a mic and communicate with a mixing desk operator to positioning microphones for the best sound. The College has everything you need, from a huge selection of microphones to live sound engineering training.”

Outside of the course, Harry has found plenty of opportunities for personal growth. “We do Thrive sessions, where we learn life skills, and they’ve even brought in motivational speakers. It’s helped me put myself out there without being afraid of making a fool of myself.”

Looking ahead, Harry hopes to complement his music career with a Sports course, but music remains his ultimate goal.

“I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”
