Meet Level 3 Music Technology student, Harley Crallan!

From producing tracks from as early as the age of thirteen to working behind the scenes at live music events, Harley has always known that music was his future. That’s why he chose to study Level 3 Music Technology at Middlesbrough College, where he is turning his dream into reality with hands-on experience, industry-standard training, and a host of opportunities to build real-world skills.

Harley’s love for music started young. At just age 12, he was already experimenting with music production and playing guitar. However, his passion really took shape when he attended an Iron Maiden concert in 2018 and saw the sound engineers working behind the scenes. He said: “I remember looking at the sound techs in the middle of the venue and thinking, I want to do that.

“I knew I wanted to be involved in the music industry, so I chose to study BTEC music at secondary school, and I loved it. However, when I started studying Music Technology at Middlesbrough College, I thought this is so much better.”

Determined to build his career as soon as possible, Harley has already secured work in the industry. He is currently a Venue Technician at Middlesbrough Town Hall and Theatre, where he has worked on live performances for local bands – and his first gig was when The Vaccines were playing! Harley has also made many connections in the local area, working alongside other Sound Engineers in venues like Café Etch to really build on his experience.

Harley said: “Eventually, I want to be a Sound Engineer, and the course at Middlesbrough College has been great at providing me with the skills I need to take my next steps.

“The course is great, but I especially love the modules that go towards my dream career. I’ve gained experience in mixing tracks, live sound, studio recordings, and more.”

The facilities have also been a game-changer for Harley, who said: “The equipment is great – the sound desks are exactly like what is in industry. The course has given me so much hands-on experience, which is a big foot in the door when it comes to working in live sound and in other venues.

“The best thing about studying Music Technology at Middlesbrough College is the constant exposure to events. Whether it’s College events like the Student Awards night or the singer’s festival or booking out facilities like the recording room – there’s always something going on, and you really have the flexibility to make the most of your time here.”

To anyone considering studying Music Technology at Middlesbrough College when they leave school, Harley says: “Go for it. The exposure to industry and the skills you learn are second to none. What’s more, the music staff are some of the friendliest people in the college, and the facilities are brilliant!”
