Finlay Buchanan completed a Level 3 Information Communications Technician apprenticeship here at Middlesbrough College. After finishing his apprenticeship, he moved into a full-time Operations Technician role on the IT Bridge, continuing his career here.
When asked what first drew him to working as an apprentice, Finlay said:
“Before this, I worked in retail security, which is a completely different industry. I’ve always been interested in computers and technology, so I kept checking for apprenticeship opportunities.
“The first time I applied, I was told I was a very close second. When the role came up again, I applied straight away and was successful. Now, here I am.
“My apprenticeship covered the day-to-day IT support I now do on the Bridge, like helpdesk support and visiting classrooms. But I also gained experience in infrastructure engineering, working with servers, switches and all back-end systems.
“It gave me a broad understanding of IT, which taught me a huge amount and helped me discover the areas I enjoy most.
“My tutor, Darren, was brilliant. It never felt like sitting in a classroom. It felt more like learning with a group of friends. Everything he taught was genuinely useful and he really knew his subject. That made learning feel natural and enjoyable.”
Finlay’s current role as an IT Operations Technician sees him supporting the college with its IT support and digital services.
“As my apprenticeship was here at the college, moving into a full-time role was really straightforward. I already knew the systems, the people and how everything worked, so settling into the job felt seamless.
“The people really do make the job. I enjoy helping staff and students every day, and it’s rewarding when someone remembers you because you’ve helped them before. It makes you realise you’ve made a difference, and that’s a great feeling.”
When asked if he would recommend an apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College, Finlay said:
“Definitely. In fact, I’ve already recommended it to two friends. One is now completing a Network Technician apprenticeship here, and another is doing an apprenticeship in Health and Safety. They’re both really enjoying it.
“I’d absolutely recommend Middlesbrough College. I enjoy the work, I enjoy the people and I’ve had a great experience from my apprenticeship through to full-time employment.”
