Meet Ayodamola, Level 3 Applied Science student, Student President and aspiring pharmacist at Middlesbrough College!
Alongside studying Level 3 Applied Science, Ayodamola is Student President, works with the National Literacy Trust, secured a pharmacy job through work experience and is now preparing for her next steps.
“When I first came to college, I thought I was just coming here to study and get into university. I never expected all the extra opportunities that would come with it.
“Becoming Student President has completely built my confidence. If you’d told me a year ago I’d be speaking in front of lots of people and representing students across the college, I wouldn’t have believed you.
“I’ve been able to attend conferences, be involved in meetings, see how the college works behind the scenes and gain work experience. It’s given me so much more than I ever expected.
“I didn’t actually know what I wanted to do when I started college, but now I’m certain I want to become a pharmacist. I’m really grateful because the college has helped me get to that point.
“I’d been looking for a job for such a long time and kept getting rejected. I was ready to give up, but after my work experience at a pharmacy they offered me a Saturday job.
“It links directly to what I want to do in the future, so I’m getting paid while learning about the career I want.
“I really like that the course isn’t just exam-based. We also complete coursework, and if you make a mistake, you get the opportunity to improve your work.
“My favourite part has definitely been the chemistry practicals. I loved being in the labs carrying out experiments.
“We’ve already learned things like referencing, research skills and dissertation writing, which has really helped with my EPQ. It’s definitely prepared me for university because we’re already learning the sort of skills people don’t usually develop until they get there.”
Alongside her studies, Ayodamola has also volunteered with the National Literacy Trust, reading with children in local libraries and supporting literacy events across Middlesbrough.
“I loved taking part in Borough Book Bash and meeting different authors. Reading with children in the libraries was such a rewarding experience and made me realise I really enjoy working with children as well.”
When asked about the support she’s received at Middlesbrough College, Ayodamola said:
“The support across the college is brilliant. Whether it’s your tutors, wellbeing support or financial help like bursaries, everyone wants you to succeed.
“Lucy has been especially supportive with my university application and personal statement. Balancing being Student President with lessons isn’t always easy, but she’s always been there whenever I’ve needed support.”
To anyone thinking about their next steps or considering a course at Middlesbrough College, she says:
“I was worried because the college seemed so big, but once you’re in the Sixth Form building it feels much smaller and really welcoming.
“If a Year 11 student asked whether they should come to Middlesbrough College, I’d definitely say yes. Whatever you want to do, they’ll help you find opportunities, whether that’s university, apprenticeships or work experience.
Everyone is really supportive and there’s always someone there if you need help.”
