This programme, written in collaboration with industry leading AV companies prepares you for employment upon graduation. You will study sound, visuals, mixed media, and key academic skills in order to directly address the needs of the sector.

The programme combines creative and technical challenges, offering four primary career progression options: live audiovisual engineer (sound, light, projection, 3D projection); site-specific audiovisual technician (schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, etc); audiovisual capture (sound recording, camera operation, vision mixing, sound/video editing & repair); audiovisual artist (live visuals, audiovisual installations, multimedia/online projects, etc).

Early modules introduce audiovisual capture, lighting, video projection, camera operation, and editing. Later modules allow you to specialise. You will learn how to plan and deliver live audiovisual events; edit, mix, and polish audiovisual content in post-production; and build/test/operate IT networking infrastructure for audiovisual content.

The course modules cover a breadth of scenarios in the live audiovisual sector including conventional music/theatre productions, business conferences, and experimental interactive audiovisual installations. The latter are facilitated by creative programming modules: one module per year focussed on creating audiovisual content via computer programming, using software such as Processing, p5.js, Arduino IDE, and Max/MSP.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved 96 UCAS tariff points from an appropriate Level 3 qualification (NVQ 3, BTEC Award or A levels).

You are also required to have GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) in English and maths or equivalent, or have demonstrated adequate skills and competencies in an interview.

You will be taught by industry practitioners and research-active academics who will help you acquire the skills and knowledge required to creatively use audiovisual technologies and produce live events.

Teaching methods will include lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and individual or group project work. Modules are delivered in our excellently equipped laboratories, including a custom audiovisual space.

Live production sessions will take place in our operational theatre, a fully functioning audiovisual performance venue.

Furthermore, our extensive links with audiovisual production companies (including Nitelites) may give opportunities for you to work on location with active industry professionals and widen your network of contacts.

Modules are assessed by a range of audiovisual media, written assignments, reports, individual and group presentations.

Students on a 3 year full degree programme will be eligible for a bursary scheme of £1000 across their first and second year of study. This is not means-tested and is split into yearly instalments across the duration of the course. This can be used as you wish but can help with course books, equipment, travel and accommodation.
