Overview

Mathematics is a stimulating and challenging subject which is highly regarded by employers and universities.

Knowledge of a wide variety of mathematical techniques and transferable skills in problem solving and analytical thinking will be acquired.

The course builds upon GCSE topics already studied, especially algebra and geometry.

This course covers a wide variety of mathematical techniques and
transferable skills in problem solving and analytical thinking. The course
includes the pure mathematic subjects:

  • Proof
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Sequences and Series
  • Trigonometry
  • Exponentials and Logarithms
  • Differentiation
  • Integration and Vectors

The final exam paper assesses statistics and mechanics.

September - June

Entry requirements

  • 5 or more GCSEs (not equivalents) including English at grade 5 or above.
  • Grade 7 in higher maths and satisfactory initial assessment grade.

100% examination.

You will complete 3 written papers at the end of year 2.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto the Higher National Certificate in Engineering at Middlesbrough College; pathways include Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation Operations Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. After completing the Higher National Certificate students can progress onto the Higher National Diploma and then complete the BEng (Hons) Engineering top-up degree.

Past students have also progressed onto our foundation degrees in Health, Wellbeing and Social Care, Early Childhood Practice, Social and Public Sector Studies and Youth, Childhood and Community Studies and then have then progressed to complete a relevant top-up degree offered at Middlesbrough College.

Other A Level courses which combine well with A Level mathematics are physics, chemistry, biology, geography and psychology.

Popular career choices for those with A-level mathematics include engineering, computing, accountancy, economics, banking, business, retail management, surveying, psychology, air traffic control, architecture, cartography, psychology and teaching. The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
