Chris Winters studied the BSc Sound and Music Technology degree programme at Middlesbrough College in 2014. When Chris graduated he quickly found work as a Technician for Middlesbrough Town Hall. After working for the Town Hall and setting up his own business producing music and sound for videos, Chris took a leap of faith and applied for a job as a Ship Technician for Disney Cruise Lines. 3 years later and with a job promotion under his belt, Chris is living the Disney dream and he thanks Middlesbrough College for giving him the skills he needed to get him there.
Chris said “I always knew that I wanted to work as part of the entertainment industry as I love music and everything technical so after I left College I started looking at degree programmes across the UK in Sound and Music Technology. I looked at a range of other providers including Newcastle, Teesside and Leeds but Middlesbrough College really stood out.
“The College definitely had the best resources available and when I came for my interview I instantly clicked with the tutors. My lecturers had industry knowledge and the course itself was very practical and hands-on, which was exactly what I needed to be able to progress in the industry.”
Chris now works as a Show Control Technician on board the classic Disney Cruise Line ships and has been lucky enough to travel all over the world visiting the Bahamas, The Caribbean, Europe, Iceland, Russia, Alaska and Mexico.
Chris said “I love my job with Disney. My role involves controlling the sound, lighting and pyrotechnic equipment and ensuring that all the equipment talks to each other. Disney is a particularly special company to work for as it is the only company that has the rights to do pyrotechnics at sea- I absolutely love seeing the families’ reactions to the shows as the special effects and stunts are incredible. The entertainment really is first class.
“The ships are an amazing place to work and I am very busy! Disney put on 6 shows per day and I am responsible for all the technical aspects so it is a huge responsibility. I also love the travelling. It has been great to see so many places in the world- I know I am very fortunate to be able to travel the globe as part of my job.
“Middlesbrough College definitely helped me to get my dream job at Disney. Everything I learnt on my degree course I put into practice every day and use regularly as part of my job. The largest benefit to the course however is the support of the lecturers and staff. Not only are they very knowledgeable about the subject's content but also that of the industry and technology. They gave me great advice to set me up for success and allowed me to explore areas that interested me and push myself further.
“I currently work in a position that I truly believe I would not have been able to achieve without the teaching and support the course offers. I would recommend the BSc Sound and Music Technology degree at Middlesbrough College to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.”
