Kick start your career in construction!

22 March 2018

Ever thought of working within construction? Well, now is a very good time to start thinking about it!

There is now a huge demand for young people with recognised trade qualifications and practical skills as there has been a significant growth in new jobs within the construction sector over the last few years.

According to Industry News, nearly 9 out 10 construction firms say that they are having trouble hiring construction workers.  The skills gap is driving up wages and with the government set to build 300,000 homes every year in England alone there has never been a better time to train for a career in the construction industry!

The construction industry is one of the largest industries worldwide, from project managing a multimillion pound high rise to contributing to the regeneration of a city centre; careers in construction can be far more varied than people often believe! Jobs in the construction industry are well paid, sought after and offer good career paths into management and team leadership.

At Middlesbrough College we offer a large selection of construction courses, and offer industry standard facilities including our sustainable outdoor construction facility. The simulated outdoor construction site, gives students the opportunity to train in a real working environment and is the only on campus outdoor construction facility in the region. Many of our students have been offered apprenticeships with construction firms as local employers frequently visit the construction facility and have been impressed with the high quality industrial standard of our student’s practical work!

As well as the outdoor construction facility, Middlesbrough College also offers bespoke workshops with industry quality facilities, fully kitted out to replicate a real working environment. These include bricklaying workshops, joinery workshops, painting and decorating workshops, electrical workshops and plumbing workshops. Students spend the majority of their course in these workshops gaining hands-on practical experience in their chosen trade.

Or, if you are unsure which construction trade you would like to specialise in why not have a look at our Basic Construction Skills course, which provides a grounding in a range of construction professions.
