Alongside traditional trades, Middlesbrough College offers a specialist construction specialism course for students looking for careers in quantity surveying, civil engineering and architecture. On the Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, students will study a vast range of topics including, housing regulations, technology and sustainability and health and safety. They will also develop practical skills in project management, design and planning and producing technical drawings.

Over 400,000 skilled construction workers are set to retire over the next decade, paving the way for new opportunities for young people in this sector. The Government’s National Infrastructure Plan for Skills also estimates that the UK will require 250,000 more construction workers by 2020 to meet the challenges caused by the housing crisis across the country.

Construction and the Built Environment students have been on a range of site visits across the year to experience various refurbishments and learn about the challenges faced by professionals and crafts alike.
