Smile Through Sports Festival

27 April 2017

Middlesbrough College students from the Foundation Learning department represented the College fantastically at a Disability Sports Festival back in October, taking full advantage of the enrichment time available to them.

The festival was run by Smile Through Sport, a Disability Sport Development Company that offer a range of high quality disability sports opportunities while inspiring individuals to participate, ultimately improving the perception and culture surrounding disability sport.

Held at Spennymoor Leisure Centre, the full-day event was attended by the College and other education institutes, giving learners the opportunity to engage in a number of disability sports and adapted sports. Some of the activities included boccia, sitting volleyball and rowing.

Middlesbrough College’s in-house Sport Maker, James Hartley said of the event; ‘’To be able to have the access to these opportunities is brilliant for our students. Events like this give them the chance to try new sports and build confidence from their positive experiences. Through this event, we have managed to create a relationship with Smile Through Sport, and one of their Teesside based coaches is now coming in to the college to do a weekly session with another group from the same department.’’

This is just an example of the exciting opportunities that can be provided through both MC Active and the sport maker programme, which is funded by the College and Sport England. As a result, students are able to increase their activity levels whilst having the chance to enjoy a great all round experience whilst at Middlesbrough College.
