Dr Helen Day joined the Governing Body as of October 2025, and offers a wealth of expertise in teaching, clinical practice, and leadership in the context of healthcare in adult and children’s acute and mental health sectors.

After 36 years of service Helen has retired as a Director of Nursing in the NHS and Professor of Nursing with Teesside University. She was a top three finalist for NHS Leader of the Year in 2015 and continued to focus on enabling others to be effective leaders by focusing on transformation, compassion, human factors and civility and unconscious bias. Since retiring, she continues to deliver leadership development in many settings. Helen is also an associate with the charity Design in Mental Health and, a volunteer with the NSPCC delivering the ‘Stay Safe Speak Out’ campaign in schools.

Helen has maintained a teaching and research portfolio throughout her career and as such is invested in ensuring we optimise the positive impact of the college educational curriculums and programs for students and employers alike.

Helen has many academic publications spanning several subject areas including leadership and staff engagement. She is both a qualified adult and children’s nurse and holds a BSc (Hons) in Child Health from Royal College of Nursing, a MSc in Nursing from London City University and a Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care from London South Bank University.
