For the second year in a row, T Level Business students at Middlesbrough College had the unique opportunity to develop their professional skills by planning and hosting a networking event for local employers in collaboration with the Meldrum Group.

This project brought together students from the T Level in Management and Administration and the T Level in Accounting courses to simulate a real-world business scenario. The Meldrum Group approached the students to organise the event, entrusting them with all aspects of the planning process from start to finish. This included marketing and budget development, securing a venue, arranging catering, and ensuring health and safety compliance.

Working in sub-groups, students focused on specific roles within the project, with regular meetings mirroring a professional work environment, fostering communication and teamwork skills.

Tutors Andrew McArthur and Sarah Robinson guided the students throughout their project. Andrew McArthur remarked, “It’s been a fantastic opportunity for the students. They’ve managed this project from start to finish, and today they’ve come looking smart and making a big impression on local employers.”

The culmination of the project was the successful networking event held at the Waterside Brasserie at Middlesbrough College. Local employers attended, providing valuable networking opportunities for themselves while witnessing the students’ hard work come to fruition.

Jacob Jervis, studying T Level Management and Administration, shared his experience: “We came in early this morning to ensure everything was set up as planned, and the breakfast and drinks were ready to be served. We’ve gained a lot of insight into different businesses, including what careers they offer, the skills they look for, and potential work placement opportunities.”

T Level Accounting student Alina Ghazanfar also shared her thoughts: “The first person I spoke to was from Middlesbrough Council, discussing their health and social care initiatives. I also spoke to Nicci from Zizus, who shared her journey from university to starting her business. The event has opened my eyes to different career paths and possibilities.”

Following their introductions at the networking event, many students secured additional work placements to support their studies next year by engaging with local businesses.

Nicola Rahman-Knight, Operations Director at Zizus Day Care and Learning Centre, praised the students: “It’s been wonderful to meet the students and see their eagerness to embrace the business world. They’ve shown great focus and interest. The fact that, as first years, they’ve organised this event covering all aspects like logistics, marketing, and catering is just brilliant.”

The Meldrum Group, a North East construction innovator, offers integrated building solutions across the UK. Their focus on quality and client satisfaction has led to rapid growth and a reputation for integrity.

Deborah Lilley, Social Value and Business Development Coordinator at the Meldrum Group, commented, “It’s been a great turnout today. The students have come out of their shells and engaged with different people.”
