4 years after completing his A Levels at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form, Liam French is thriving in his graduate scheme with the Civil Service.
After gaining straight B grades in History, Sociology and Law, Liam successfully gained a place to study Law at the University of Westminster, London but Liam quickly realised that university was not the right option for him and instead gained a place on a sought after higher apprenticeship scheme with the Civil Service.
After impressing in his higher apprenticeship with the Civil Service, Liam bagged a place on the award-winning graduate leadership development programme (currently rated rated No.1 in the Times Top 100), a fast stream programme that offers structured development into a government profession.
Liam is currently in the first year of his scheme and works within the Digital, Data and Technology stream. On the digital, data and technology stream, graduates learn how to lead teams that design, build and run government digital services. As part of his training, Liam rotates around the department in different roles every six months and is currently working as a Service Design and Transition Manager.
Liam said “I am really enjoying my graduate scheme with the Civil Service and it is great to be earning a salary whilst training. University isn’t for everyone and I would encourage students to look at alternative options.”
“Studying A Levels at MC6 has set me up well for the working world and helped me to gain a place on my graduate scheme as I have gained a host of transferable skills.
“I can’t praise Middlesbrough College Sixth Form enough - I made loads of friends and the facilities are outstanding.
“Rachel Stainthorpe was my History teacher at MC6 and she was the best teacher I have ever had. She had incredible attention to detail and was always so organised. She gave me amazing support, as did all my tutors at College.
“I also studied the distance learning courses that Middlesbrough College offers which I would encourage anyone to do as they are interactive, informative, flexible and a modern way of learning.
“My advice to current students is to aim high- you can work in the capital and still live in Middlesbrough. I am now doing things I never thought I would do and I am absolutely loving it!
“I have 3 years to go with my scheme and once I have completed it I will be a Senior Civil Servant which is extremely exciting. I can’t thank Middlesbrough College enough for helping to get me there.”
