Starting at College can be a little daunting but don’t worry, here at Middlesbrough College we pride ourselves on providing every student with the best student support possible.

We provide a range of services to support you and have created this handy blog post to signpost you on the services available should you ever need a helping hand.

Course & Career support

If you aren’t sure what you want to study at College, don’t panic; our Careers Team are on hand to support you to find a course that is perfectly suited to you.

Our Careers service is accredited by the matrix standard and our team of advisors provide free information, advice and guidance. The team will help you to explore your options and point you in the right direction.

If you’ve started on your course at College and it isn’t what you expected, the Careers Team is the first point of contact and a member of the team will guide you through the process and support you to find a course at Middlesbrough College that is right for you. So if you feel you’ve made the wrong decision about what to study, talk to a member of our friendly Careers Team and they will ensure that they help you with your next steps.

Our Careers Team can also help you to make challenging decisions about your future and advise you on how to your dreams a reality. If you aspire to progress into work, an apprenticeship or higher education, the Careers Team are fully qualified to provide support for you.

Financial support

We know how expensive life can be, so that’s why we offer a financial support package to help you.

If you’re aged between 16-18, you won’t have to pay for your studies and we offer a range of services to support you during your time at College. We offer a bursary scheme of £350 per year for eligible students. This is means tested and subject to status. Bursaries are also linked to your attendance, performance and behaviour. You may also be able to receive help with your equipment or uniform depending on your circumstances.

If you received free meals at school then this will continue for you at College. All full-time students will also receive a 10% discount on all food.

All full-time students can also access free* travel to and from College, with bus travel available 7 days per week and reimbursed train travel when using a 16-17 Saver Card! Find out more here

Wellbeing Support

We take your wellbeing very seriously and want to make sure you have the best possible time at College. We understand that you may be going through a difficult time in your life or may struggle with your mental health. We offer a helping hand and provide counselling services to all students. Counselling is available to all students and is free and confidential. You can seek support from the team for a range of issues, including relationship problems, anger management, domestic abuse and low self-esteem. We can also offer help with more college related struggles, such as studying, stress and dissatisfaction.

Additional learning support

At Middlesbrough College, we recognise that each and every one of our students is unique and that some students may need extra support to have the best possible experience whilst studying. We offer additional learning support to any students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and are committed to providing a learning environment in which there is equality.

We offer a range of services to enable you to access the College and our team of professional and experienced staff will work closely with you to provide you with an individual support package, tailored specifically to your needs.
