Physics (A Level) – Level 3

In the first year you will study:

• Measurements and their error
• Particles and Radiation
• Quantum Phenomena
• Electricity
• Waves and Optics
• Mechanics
• Materials

In the second year you will study:

• Circular and Harmonic Motion
• Thermal Physics
• Gravitational Fields
• Electrical Fields and Capacitance
• Magnetic Fields and Induction
• Nuclear Physics and Radiation

Option Module: Turning points, including:

• Wave-Particle Duality
• The discovery of the Electron
• Special Relativity

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

5 GCSEs at Grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English Language and mathematics at Grade 5, GCSE Science (Combined) at Grade 6 OR GCSE Physics (Separate) at Grade 6.

We recommend you study A Level Mathematics or 2 other sciences at A Level (Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science) alongside this course.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

You are assessed informally throughout the year in end of unit assessments.

Externally, you will sit AS Level exams at the end of Year 1, and then the A Level exams at the end of Year 2.

AS Level Exams: 2 written papers.One that focuses on the taught content, and the other on your practical, analysis and problem solving skills.

A Level Exams: 3 written papers. One that primarily focuses on the Year 1 content as describe above, one that focuses on the Year 2 content as described above, and the third focuses on the practical, analysis, and problem solving skills, as well as the option module content.

University opportunities:
Many students who study A Level Physics go on to study mathematics, physics, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, economics or business at University.

Studying A-level Physics offers an infinite number of amazing career opportunities including radiation protection practitioner, research scientist, acoustic engineer, systems developer, geophysicist, medical physics and meteorologist.

Our MC Click scheme provides full-time students (ages 16-19) on Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with the opportunity to loan a laptop to assist with their studies.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
