Introduction to Public Services – Level 1

The course is split into two qualifications.

The first qualification is the Level 1 Certificate and the units covered are as follows:

• Public Service Careers
• Practical Team work in the Public Services
• Map Reading
• Introduction to Expedition Skills

The second qualification is the Level 1 Extended Certificate. This qualification consists of the following units:

• Health and Fitness for the Public Services
• Improving Fitness for the Public Services
• Personal Skills for the Public Services
• Public Service Project
• Developing Personal Skills for the Public Services
• Building Working Relationships with Colleagues
• Building Working Relationships with Customers

September – June

You must have achieved an appropriate Entry Level vocational qualification and/or GCSEs at grade 2-1 (E0F0 or above.

You will be assessed through theory and practical assignment work, which are computer based and electronically submitted.

You can progress onto the Level 2 Public Service course or apply for the service of your choice.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

All full time students will be offered a number of options to secure at least 10 days of meaningful work experience during the year. This is an important aspect of the course and will help to develop your skills securing employment, progress to a higher level qualification at Middlesbrough College or potentially gain a place at university.

The Public Services gain their work experience through PDA’s with the Police, Fire Service and the Army.
