General Welder Apprenticeship – Level 2

Skills learnt include:

• Demonstrate proficiency in 2 essential welding process/material combinations (TIG, MMA, MIG/MAG, FCAW) and (Carbon & Low Alloy Steel, High Alloy Ferritic/Martensitic Steel, Austenitic Stainless Steel, Nickel & Nickel Alloys, Aluminium & Aluminium Alloys), mastering welds in 2 key positions (Downhand, Horizontal, Vertical, Overhead).
• Achieve industry-recognized certification compliant with ISO 9606 / ASME IX / BS4872 / AWS D1.1, as determined by the employer.
• Deliver impeccable welds meeting international standards for dimensional and surface inspection (Visual, Magnetic Particle Inspection & Dye Penetrant Inspection).
• Become an equipment expert in positioning, preparing, and maintaining welding equipment for optimal performance.
• Efficiently manage consumables by receiving, handling, and maintaining them according to best practices.
• Meticulously prepare, check, and protect materials and work areas to ensure a flawless welding environment.
• Conduct rigorous final inspections of completed welds, reporting results into the production control system for seamless traceability.
• Maintain an unwavering commitment to health and safety regulations throughout all processes, prioritizing a safe and responsible work environment.

Employment in a suitable role for the chosen apprenticeship is essential. Northern Skills will work with applicants to help find a suitable employer where possible but we advise anyone looking to undertake an apprenticeship to actively seek employment for themselves.

Applicants are required to have gained a Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE Grades 9-4/A-C). Certificates will need to be produced at enrolment. If proof cannot be produced or you do not meet these entry requirements, then applicants will be invited to complete an initial assessment prior to acceptance. An interview will take place.

If you do not have a grade 9 to 4 in English and/or Maths (grade A-C for previous GCSE measures) you will be required to continue studying these subjects.

This qualification is assessed through a mandatory three-part holistic end-point assessment.

• Multi-Positional Welder
• High Integrity Welder or Welding Instruction and Teaching
• Welding Inspection and Managing
• Supervising Welding Operations
