BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science – Level 3

You will study a variety of units with 7 of these being mandatory and 6 optional. Mandatory units are in bold. They vary in exams, controlled assessments, practical work and assignments.

Year 1:

• Principles and applications of Science 1
• Practical scientific procedures and techniques
• Scientific investigation skills
• Laboratory techniques and their application
• Physiology of human body systems
• Astronomy and space science

Year 2:

• Principles and applications of Science 2
• Investigative project
• Contemporary issues in Science
• Disease and infestations
• Forensic evidence, collection and analysis
• Forensic traffic collision investigation
• Medical physics applications

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

You should have achieved at least five GCSEs at Grade 4/5 or above, including English language, mathematics, and science.

You will be assessed by exams in January of Year 1 of the course and in January in Year 2 of the course in the principles and applications of science units.

There will also be controlled assessments in May of Year 1 and January of Year 2 in which you will have prior knowledge of the questions though not the scenario they are applied to.

The rest of the units have assignment work that is completed throughout the year.

University opportunities:

Past students have progressed to study degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, crime scene science, dietetics, radiography, biomedicalparamedic sciences and forensic science. Some students move on to apprenticeships or employment in the science industry.?

Career opportunities:

Career opportunities include chemical science, laboratory technician, research or development,
management, environmental professions, and conservation.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

A 10-day work placement is encouraged as part of your time on the course. Students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
