The stars aligned for Manus McGuigan as he opened his results to find an A* in maths and two As in further maths and physics.
The 18-year-old from Thirsk has secured a top spot at Newcastle University to study Astrophysics, with the hopes of progressing onto a PHD and eventually securing a research placement abroad.
He said: “I didn’t expect these results at all and was genuinely shocked when I opened the envelope.
“I took part in Newcastle University’s PARTNERS Programme which included online lectures, mock assessments and at-home experiments, in return for a lower conditional offer. The summer school was great but, in the end, I achieved more than was required to secure my place so I’m very proud.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the College – the staff have been really supportive and I’ve made a lot of great friends here.”
