Anita Race

Childcare Lecturer

Anita tells us about her impressive career that has taken her to warmer climates!

“I moved to Greece when I was 19 after completing my A Levels, where I worked as a nanny for just over two years – I’m half Greek so I was able to adapt very quickly!

“A little while after, I decided to make the decision to come back to the UK and gain a level 3 qualification in childcare. Following this I went back to Greece, again working as a nanny for 7 years with an incredible family. It was a real eye-opening experience and one I learnt a lot from!

“I continued working in Athens in a nursery school for four years which was when I met my partner. I was also keen to get a degree, so I returned to the UK and enrolled onto a part-time foundation degree in early years which I balanced alongside working as an inclusion officer at the Council – my role involved me working with learners with additional needs which was incredibly fulfilling. I also picked up learning sign language around this time, so there was quite a lot to balance alongside being a mother, but it was so worth it!

“I then started a full-time position in a nursery as an early years SEN practitioner whilst completing my degree. Around the same time, I was asked by the Local Authority to do a number of talks on inclusion and hold masterclasses with students – which was the point in my career where I developed a real passion for teaching.

“Fast forward a few years and I had completed a top-up degree in early years studies and was teaching level 3 Childcare at a further education college in the North East, before joining the team at Middlesbrough College as a lecturer in 2013.

“Although it’s hard to pinpoint just one, my standout moment would have to be the fundraising I have organised. From sponsored walks and cake sales, to raffles and pyjama sales, we managed to raise over £1,500 for a charity supporting people with cancer.

“No two days are the same at the College – my role is so rewarding! It’s amazing to see students progress onto incredible things.

“When I’m not at work, I love spending time with family, listening to music and being in the great outdoors!”
