Andy Duggan
Meet Andy Duggan, the Curriculum Team Leader for Social Sciences at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form!
Andy attended Nunthorpe School and then progressed to study A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. After enjoying his science A Level studies, Andy pursued a degree in Natural Sciences at Lancaster University.
Andy said: “I enjoyed studying my degree at University, Natural Sciences is a brilliant route for students who want to study across different scientific disciplines. This also included studying about Environmental and Earth Sciences, Ecology and Psychology.”
After leaving home for University, Andy who is a passionate ‘Teessider’ returned home to complete his teacher training and became a qualified Biology teacher. He said: “Teaching has always been in my family; both my parents are teachers and have enjoyed their careers in education. It must be in my blood as it seemed like the perfect next step for me.”
After qualifying, Andy enjoyed roles in a variety of education settings including teaching online for students who couldn’t access traditional schooling. Andy is also one of the few chartered science teachers in the region, recognised by the association of science education!
Andy then secured his role at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form and has enjoyed working for the College for ten years. He said: “I have really enjoyed working at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form, the team here are amazing and I really enjoy delivering the subjects I teach. I’ve progressed during my time at the College into a team leader role which has brought new challenges. The College really do care about your career development, and it is a lovely place to work.
“As part of my role, I’m responsible for the delivery and teaching and learning of Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, the Extended Project Qualification, Applied Psychology and Environmental Science. I love my role as it is so varied and no two days are the same.
“I am also proud to have launched the Environmental Science A Level course at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form, we are one of the only Sixth Form College’s in the North East to offer the programme, which is exciting! It’s a brilliant course that focuses on modules such as global warming, sustainability, conservation and food production. The course covers all the sciences and the impact on the environment and focuses on creating solutions to problems. I’m passionate about this course as it is so relevant to the modern world. Sustainability is a growing sector, especially as the country pushes towards net zero, the demand for green careers will continue to increase.
“We are in the second year of offering the Environmental Science A Level and I’m excited to see where my students will progress to. Many of them are choosing green career paths with some progressing to degrees in Geosciences, Earth Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science and Paleontology.
“If you enjoy science, are a logical thinker and care about the world, then Environmental Science is the perfect course for you.”
