Alan Wilson

Construction Lecturer

Alan studied for a 5 year joinery apprenticeship after leaving school and worked in the furniture making industry for 24 years before he decided to go into teaching.

After working as a cabinet maker for a furniture factory in Durham, Alan completed a Diploma in Technical Management and was promoted to Operations Manager of the factory.

In 2005 Alan decided he wanted to inspire and help young people and decided to retrain as a teacher. After completing a PGCE, Alan applied for a Joinery teaching role at Middlesbrough College and 15 years later he is still absolutely loving his role!

Alan teaches around 70 students every year and has seen hundreds of student’s progress into professional careers. He keeps in touch with many of his students and meets up with former student of the year Liam Steel for a coffee and catch up every year!

Alan said “Middlesbrough College has been my first and only teaching position. It’s been a great journey. I started teaching on the Joinery BTEC and have progressed to set up the Access course and teach on a range of programmes.

“The whole teaching team in Construction is fantastic and we really do care about each individual student and want them to succeed.

“My favourite part of the role is taking the students on trips! We have been all over the UK on field trips to see woodwork shows and other workshops and exhibitions. It’s great to build relationships with the students and watch them go on to thrive in their careers.”

Outside of teaching, Alan is a family man, and has recently become a new Grandfather.
