Overview

This course is designed to provide an enhanced learning programme to meet the future needs of the modern vehicle technician and master technician. The aim of the qualification is to develop the necessary knowledge and understanding required of diagnostic and repair technicians, and to provide you with progression opportunities for career development and further study.

You will study modules in overhauling light vehicle engine mechanical units, vehicle electrical and electronics, how to identify and agree motor vehicle customer service needs and inspecting light vehicles.

  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Engine Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Faults

Optional modules include:

  • Knowledge of How to Identify and Agree Motor Vehicle Customer Service Needs
  • Knowledge of Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
  • Knowledge of Overhauling Light Vehicle Engine Mechanical Units
  • Vehicle Electrical and Electronics 3
  • Information Communication and Technology for Vehicle Repair 3
  • Vehicle Mathematics 3
  • Vehicle Science 3

As part of your learning programme you will also attend the following session:

  • Maths (Exempt if you have a minimum of GCSE grade 4 (C) in Maths)
  • English (Exempt if you have a minimum of GCSE grade 4 (C) in English language)

  • 1:1 Tutorials
  • Enrichment Activities

September - June

Entry requirements

You must have achieved the Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair- Level 2 qualification.

The assessments for this qualification have a practical focus and combine various assessment styles/methodologies in order to suit the subject and levels of units contained within it.

Assessment methods include practical assignments, written assignments and online tests.

You can progress onto a Foundation Degree in Motor Sport.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Explore Motor Vehicle

Motor Vehicle students will have access to our fully-equipped motor vehicle service unit which is based on main dealer standards. Here, they will gain practical skills in a wide variety of vehicles using up-to-date equipment and diagnostic tools and develop theoretical knowledge using custom built training rigs and interactive resources.
