Overview

*You must have a Level 2 GCSE or equivalent in English and maths. We reserve the right to check qualifications for entry criteria to the course and cancel your enrolment with a full refund if there is no proof of certification.

The course is composed of Level 3 modules.

You will study mechanical and electrical engineering subjects together with chemical engineering and higher mathematics.

In addition, you will complete a design project. This is a chance to demonstrate the capabilities and skills that have been acquired in all the other areas. You will devise and develop an engineering product or service.

Entry requirements

Due to the nature of the programme you must demonstrate the ability to be working at a minimum of Level 2 in mathematics and English, this can be demonstrated by your achievement of a grade 4 (C) or equivalent in GCSE Maths, English and Science, or through a diagnostic test at interview.

Assessment is designed to prepare you for the full range of assessment methods you will experience at university.

Methods will include examinations, presentations, written assignments, practical assignments and a design project.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto the Higher National Certificate in Engineering at Middlesbrough College; pathways include Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation Operations Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. After completing the Higher National Certificate students can progress onto the Higher National Diploma and then complete the BEng (Hons) Engineering top-up degree. 

Successful completion of the course will enable you to apply for an engineering degree programme at a university in the UK. This includes, but is not limited to, chemical/process engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course. 

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances. 

Level 3 Entitlement: If you are aged 19 - 23 on the start date of the course and this is your first full Level 3 qualification the course is free.

Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 and this is not your first full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. The Advanced Learner Loan will not be repayable by students who progress into Higher Education and complete their degree.

Please note any fee shown excludes any additional costs to learners for any necessary equipment, materials, uniforms or any visit/residential that learners are required to participate in.
