This course will develop your skills in a range of specialist areas such welding with the Tungsten Inert Gas/Tungsten Arc Gas (TIG/TAG) Shielded Welding Process and Welding with the Manual Metal Arc process.

This course has a good balance between theory and practical work and you will learn by applying your skills and knowledge to a range of industry-based situations that occur in a real working environment. You will cover engineering health and safety, preparing and quality controlling and the welding process.

September - June

Entry requirements

You must have completed L2 Welding Performing Engineering Operations. School leavers are not able to apply for this course.

Assessment will be on-going in the workshop throughout the year for all practical welding where you will need to complete eight test pieces, four MMA and four TAGs.

There is a Gola Health and Safety multi choice exam. Three written exams including Prep and QA, Manual Metal Arc Welding and Tungsten Arc Gas Welding.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto the Higher National Certificate in Engineering at Middlesbrough College; pathways include Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation Operations Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. After completing the Higher National Certificate students can progress onto the Higher National Diploma and then complete the BEng (Hons) Engineering top-up degree.

Completion of the course will enable you to work in areas such as product manufacturing or quality control.

You could also progress to a higher education qualification such as an HNC, HND or degree, or entry onto an advanced apprenticeship framework in welding.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
