This Level 3 course prepares you for a career in the health and social care sector and depending on whether you enrol on the Certificate or the Extended Diploma you will study twelve or eighteen units.

You will develop the necessary academic skills required to prepare you for studying at the next level, so that they are fully prepared for university. You will also develop the knowledge and practical skills to work within a health and social care setting as you will attend a work placement throughout your time on the course.

You will be taught by a specialised team who have worked in the sector and use their specialist knowledge to support and guide you. We also have a specially equipped ward which is used for teaching and assessments in a practical way.

In your second year you will have the opportunity to specialise in either health sciences, health or care.

This Level 3 Certificate course prepares you for a career in the health and social care sector.

All students will complete the certificate before enrolling onto the extended diploma. You will have the option to pick a pathway, these include social care, health studies and heath sciences.

Modules offered may vary.

These will include:

  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care
  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
  • Work Experience in Health and Social Care
  • Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care
  • Promoting Public Health

This will also include specialist units depending on what pathway you choose in your second year and a mandatory work placement of at least 100 hours.

If you have not achieved GCSE maths or English at grade 4 (C) you will continue to study these at Level 2.

September - June

Entry requirements

You must have achieved the Level 3 CACHE Certificate.

Your new BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care are assessed through a range of practical and written vocational assessments including a externally marked exam and set tests. You will take the same exam at the same time, normally with a written outcome. Set tasks will be completed during a defined window, students will demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.

You can showcase your learning from a combination of assessment styles to show that you can apply your knowledge to succeed in the workplace, and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout your career.

You can progress on to university degree programmes and foundation degrees including working with children and young people, adult social care, social work, nursing, psychology and criminology. Should you want to go directly into employment you will have an A Level equivalent qualification which employers will welcome.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
