After caring for her mother during her battle with cancer, Julian Nwosu, a 42 year old full-time mum of three from Ingleby Barwick decided she wanted to change her life by becoming a qualified Nurse.
Julian enrolled onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health at Middlesbrough College one year ago and is now on track to graduate with a first class honours degree in Adult Nursing.
Julian said “I’ve always loved taking care of people and making them happy. As a full-time stay-at-home mum my main priority was ensuring my children were well looked after and happy. But after my mum became ill and I became her full-time carer, I discovered my passion for the medical profession and decided I wanted to care for others like her who are unwell. That’s when it clicked for me and I knew I wanted to become a Nurse.
“I already had my Psychology degree so I could have applied to study a one-year postgraduate course, but because I had been out of education for a long time I decided to come back to College to gain a deeper understanding of the subject and prepare myself for University.
“The course is demanding but so rewarding. I studied the course on an evening and my tutors were excellent. During the year my father sadly passed away and I debated quitting, but Nicola and Julia, my tutors, were extremely supportive and encouraged me to continue with my studies.
“It was all worth it when I found out I had secured a place at University to study Adult Nursing. Everyone at my interview was very impressed with my knowledge, skills and personality and I was offered a place just one day after my interview.
“I would definitely recommend studying an Access course. The course prepares you well for University as you learn about referencing and research, which has really helped me when completing assignments at University. I’m now on track for a first class honours degree and I don’t know if I would have achieved such high marks without studying the Access course.
“I honestly feel like Nursing is a career I should have been doing my whole life. I absolutely love it. My advice to anyone considering changing career or coming back into education is to just do it! It’s never too late to change your life and pursue your dreams! I’m 42 so by the time I’m qualified I will have twenty years to enjoy working in a job I love and I’m passionate about.”
