Alumni student Robert Herlingshaw studied for an apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair with the A66 Test Centre through Middlesbrough College back in 2011. Wanting to progress to the next level in his career Rob decided to enrol on to the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering and passed his diploma with the top possible distinction grade. Now he is studying for his dream degree in Automotive Engineering at Northumbria University and has big plans to work for some of the world’s leading car manufacturers.
Rob said “I wanted to progress in my career and the Access to Higher Education Diploma was the perfect option for me. I would recommend this course to anyone! I can’t sing the praises of the course and the College enough.
“My tutors went above and beyond, often putting on extra classes so I felt prepared for assignments and university level study and the facilities at the College are absolutely amazing- I can’t fault it at all.
“If you want to progress in your career then definitely consider doing an Access to Higher Education Diploma. I was planning to study for a foundation year before I studied my Access course, but the programme really boosted my confidence and I walked straight into my degree.”
The former ‘Access Student of the Year 2017’ is set to study for an Erasmus year in Heilbronn, Germany and is intending on completing an internship with some of the world’s leading car manufactures as BMW, Porsche and Mercedes are all based here.
Rob said ““One of the highlights of my time at Middlesbrough College was the Motor Vehicle field trip to Prague. On the trip we got to visit a car manufacturers- it was amazing, definitely a trip that I will always remember!
“The trip inspired me to move abroad as I would love to design and manufacture cars for a world renowned company and it’s so exciting that I am one step closer to doing just that.
“I can’t thank Middlesbrough College enough for everything they have done for me. I am absolutely loving university life! I am the programme rep for Automotive Engineering, the department rep for Engineering and the President of the Salsa Dancing society.
“My degree is everything I thought it would be and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.”
