5 years later…

Since leaving Middlesbrough College 5 years ago, Liam Steel, former student of the year has gone from strength to strength and continues to meet his tutor Alan Wilson every year for a coffee and catch-up!

After completing his Level 2 Plumbing course and unsure what to do next, Liam enrolled onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and Built Environment, where he met his tutor Alan. With support from Alan and the Construction team at Middlesbrough College, Liam completed his Diploma with flying colours and was offered an apprenticeship with fully funded degree level study.

5 years later and Liam has now completed his Quantity Surveying degree at Northumbria University and is employed as a Quantity Surveyor with WSP.

“My course at College definitely helped me with my degree studies, especially during the first years at University. I found I could answer questions really easily and that I already knew a lot of the course content. Some students who took a more traditional, academic route to University struggled a lot more.

“Things are going well and I am busy at work! The College and everyone has been so helpful and supported me through my studies. My maths teacher Jo would stay behind late to give me extra help and support, which is something she didn’t have to do and through my studies I would send Alan my assignments to proof read! I can’t thank the tutors enough, they are brilliant.

"My BTEC course with Alan was the start of it all; it has all been so worth it. I am now a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor and am working hard towards a promotion whilst gaining valuable experience”

Alan said “Liam did it all by pure determination.  It’s great to catch up with him and see that what you are doing is right to make sure we have more success stories like him.”
