Free devices will be distributed at enrolment for the academic year 2021/22 to all 16-19 students on a level 2 or 3 study programme (who have not purchased a device through us in 2020/21) and all first year HE students on a level 4 programme.

We will also loan a device to any continuing students who borrowed a device during 2020/21 and who are still studying with us in 21/22. This will be confirmed after October half term.

The free device scheme will be expanded in the academic years 2022/23 and 2023/24 to cover all full time students – including Access courses and all Higher Education students.

The device will be kept by you at all times and can be used by you at College or at home at any time throughout your course. The device remains the property of Middlesbrough College under the loan scheme but can be bought at the end of your course at a competitive price (for example a £20 administration fee at the end of 3 years).

The college has a stock of 4000 devices with two main types (valued at over £400 each) and with a specification as listed below:

Dell Latitude 3120 2 in 1  - ideal for vocational courses

  •  Intel Celeron N5100 Processor
  • 11.6 HD Touchscreen
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB Hard Drive
  • Dual Camera and microphone
  • AC Power Adapter

Dell Latitude 3190 – ideal for academic courses

  • Intel Celeron N4120 Processor
  • 11.6 HD Screen
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB Hard Drive
  • Camera and microphone
  • AC Power Adapter

  • Digital devices are a great way for you to complete your work and showcase your skills. You can capture activities on video, create and share surveys and polls, and record group discussions and tutor feedback, all with the click of a button. New in-built AI features will also help you improve your spelling, grammar and punctuation, create dynamic presentations and even turn speech-to-text.
  • We know you are keen to come to College and study face-to-face alongside your fellow students, learning from your inspirational teachers. The MC Click scheme isn’t an attempt to replace your physical College attendance, but simply an opportunity to ensure all learners are equipped with the tools and skills to succeed, no matter what your subject.
  • Whilst many of our students have their own device at home, the issue of a college device ensures all students have the same access to IT to complete their assignments and any online modules within their course.
  • Over time, we hope to remove some of the computers from our classrooms to provide a more flexible learning environment for our students and teachers. This does not mean that your device will be required for every lesson as we value face to face teaching and developing writing skills, but it may mean that they are required in some classes.
  • With an increase in digital collaboration, communication, and content delivery – students are able to study and work from home in a more flexible way
  • The expansion of personal devices means that the learning resource centre can be used for more collaborative learning or for those who don’t have quiet spaces at home.

The College retains full ownership of each device until such time as a student purchases this from the college when a certificate of ownership will be issued to you upon transfer.

  • It is important that you take care of your equipment.
  • If you lose your device you must inform us straightaway so we can disable the device via security / tracking software that we have asked the supplier to pre install on each machine. You are not guaranteed a replacement and may be asked to contribute to the lost value of the device.
  • If you damage your device – you may be asked to contribute up to £50 towards fixing it. If you receive the college bursary, this can be paid for from that bursary scheme.

Yes – however you need to be aware that:

  • If you leave the college, the device will be disabled, unable to be used and any data or information installed will be lost
  • When you return the device – all information on it will be deleted
  • Personal use must be for appropriate content only and must not interfere with the performance of the device for example downloading of large and multiple video content
  • Our web filtering systems will continue to flag any inappropriate material / website searches made by these devices and students accessing inappropriate material will be spoken to individually to determine the seriousness of the breach.

  • Yes – and this software will be regularly and remotely updated by us, however we recommend you remain cautious about emails, website or other on line content which is of an unknown or suspicious source and seek advice from college if you need help or support.

  • Eligible students will receive their device upon receipt of their ID card – which should be immediately after your enrolment is confirmed on site
  • You will be required to sign electronically to confirm you understand the terms and conditions of issue and of use and the commitment to return the device to college when you leave us (unless you wish to purchase the device per above)

  • Yes – however if you change your mind and choose not to return to college, you must return your device to the Help Centre before 1st September of the following academic year

  • If you are loaning a device – you must return it to the Help Centre on the main Middlehaven site within 1 week of leaving your course
  • If you have fully paid for your device it is yours to keep
  • If you are in the middle of making monthly instalments under our rental scheme, you can choose whether to make your outstanding payment to acquire the device – or return the device to college

  • You should think of your device as an essential part of your ‘digital pencil case’ - just like pens, pencils and highlighters, think of it as just one of the many study tools you’ll need to use every day

  • You will not need to use your device in every lesson, but you may be asked to use your device at any time and so it is important that you carry it with you at all times as part of your day-to-day college equipment

  • There will be a small number of devices in each classroom available for students who forget their device. Individual access to these is not guaranteed therefore it is important you remember to bring your device into college when required

  • The battery life on the devices should last all day if fully charged on the morning

  • It is a requirement that devices are charged each day before college

  • There will be a limited number of charging points available on site

  • Yes – you can buy the device at the outset through a one-off payment of £400 or ten monthly payments of £40 (with no credit checks)

  • You can buy a one year old device at a reduced price of £300

  • You can buy a two year old device at a reduced price of £200

  • You can own a three year old device for an administration fee of £20

Please note that before transfer of ownership there will be some changes to software and content on the machines. Please seek advice from the Help Centre on the main campus.

Our refurbished learning resource centre (LRC) has over 90 pre bookable devices which can be used at any time during their extended opening hours for your assignment or college work

Alternatively, a device rental scheme remains open to all students and offers preferential rates and monthly payments without credit checks – after which the device transfers ownership to you. Contact helpdesk@mbro.ac.uk for more details.
