High Flying Students at Middlesbrough College

15 Aug 2024
Level 3 Results Day

Students are overjoyed as Middlesbrough College announces fantastic A-Level, T-Level and Vocational results, further solidifying its position as a leading provider of education and training in the region.

These exceptional achievements follow a glowing Ofsted report, which praised the College for its high-quality teaching, strong student outcomes, excellent links with industry and outstanding leadership.

This year’s A-Level students have excelled, with a 98% overall pass rate and over two-thirds of students achieving high grades – with an increasing number achieving A* grades.

Students studying subjects including Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Law have done particularly well with students such as Alyssa Agaimwonyi securing one A* and two A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. Alyssa will take up a place at Hull York Medical School to study Medicine, along with many others securing places at esteemed HE institutions across the UK.

Alyssa said: “The tutors at Middlesbrough College bring so much energy to the classroom, there’s never a dull moment. The staff and faculty genuinely care about the students, they’re always ready to help with any difficulties.

“Exams were a big challenge, and self-doubt was tough, but the lecturers’ support made all the difference. They offered extra lessons to build confidence in weaker areas. I’m now aspiring to be a geneticist, inspired by my Biology tutor.”

These results underscore the College’s commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary for higher education success and the world of work.

In addition to A-Level achievements, Middlesbrough College has tripled the number of students studying T-Level programmes which combine in-class learning with extended practical work experience in the form of 45-day work placement.

Subjects that have done particularly well this year gaining a number of distinction profiles include T-Level Onsite Construction and T-Level Building Services Engineering Electrical Installation.

Results for vocational programmes have seen another high with more than 55% completing a two-year BTEC vocational qualification achieving Distinction grades and students looking to go on and study at university as software developers, nurses, social workers and engineers.

And Northern Skills, the College’s apprenticeship and training arm, are on track for an excellent set of apprenticeship results and are expecting to move from being in the top ten percent in the country to the top five percent for results cementing its recent Ofsted Outstanding grade.

Zoe Lewis, Principal and Chief Executive of Middlesbrough College Group, commented: “We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements. These outstanding results, alongside our recent Ofsted rating of Good with six Outstanding grades along with a Strong contribution rating for Skills, are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students.

“We remain committed to providing our learners with the best possible education and training, preparing them for successful futures.”

Over 785 students are progressing to higher education in September with 88% accepting places at their first-choice university and 15% going to Sutton 30 establishments.

T-Level student Abbie Jinks, who achieved a distinction in Education and Early Years Teaching, has already secured a job as a teaching assistant. She said: “The help from the teachers was second to none and the hands-on work experience was invaluable. Huge shoutout to my amazing tutors, Rachel, Anita and Hannah!

“My advice for those considering Middlesbrough College – with all the support around you, you can do it!”

Middlesbrough College Group’s £120 million campus supports over 15,000 students, including 2,200 apprentices.

Its role as a regional leader will be further strengthened with the opening of a new £12 million TTE Technical Centre in September 2024. This state-of-the-art facility will train over 1,100 students annually, including apprentices and adult learners, positioning the College as the largest provider of engineering training for school leavers in the country.

The Centre will also expand into high-demand sectors such as clean energy and zero carbon technologies, ensuring students gain the skills needed for future industries.

In addition, the College recently opened a new Immersive Health and Social Care Education Suite, funded by £7 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, addressing the region’s growing need for skilled health professionals. The suite offers students practical experience in simulated clinical environments, enhancing their readiness for real-world healthcare roles.

Further investment includes a new Adult & Community Learning Centre in Middlesbrough town centre, which will expand opportunities for adult learners, helping even more people gain life-changing skills and secure employment.

In March of this year, education inspectors from Ofsted highlighted the College’s supportive learning environment, strong leadership and effective partnerships with employers. Inspectors also praised the College’s commitment to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workplace.
